When compounding, your new item will not exceed a + of 4 in the rank. Meaning that your new item cannot be higher than 4 ranks that any of your items that you used.
Alchemy books are usually used when compounding high level items or equipment to decrease the probability of failing the compound.
A good way to train your alchemy skills is by compounding small wooden materials that you can manufacturer from your wooden saw in the tent.
